There comes a time in a girl’s life when she just wants to change her appearance. Usually we think of going to the hairstylist where we end up getting a drastic color change or a super short haircut. The next morning we wake up and wonder what we were thinking. Sometimes, it is the next month when we realize that we want our glamorous curls back, but, alas, there is nothing to be done about it. At least not naturally. Extensions hurt. They are awful to sleep on. So most of us tough it out and wait until we get our hair back.
I have been there. That is why I thought this post will be wonderful for those of you who wonder how I look so differently in my profile pictures. The answer is very simple. I use good make up and professional wigs. There is nothing better to change your appearance than using those two components together. The best of all: you can remove them both by the end of the day and you have yourself your own hair that you can do something different with the next day.
Changing your appearance does not have to be permanent, difficult or expensive.
I am very creative. That means there are often times when I just want a completely different look. Let’s say we are going to the theater with my husband. Depending on the show, I might want a short hairstyle in a different color. On the other hand, I might want long curls and a glamorous hairdo if we are going to the opera. Other times I just wake up feeling artsy and need a change. The ways I am going to share with you will satisfy many different reasons you might have for wanting to change your appearance.
Sometimes I just want to create a very unique hairstyle that I want to never take off. Have you ever had that feeling of having perfect hair only to have to take it all apart by the end of the day? I bet you have. I certainly have had that experience very often in the past. Well, not anymore.
I am going to share with you a few tips and tricks that are easy, relatively inexpensive and most of all fast. You don’t have to spend hours upon hours in front of the mirror especially if you are like me and have a little baby that you just can’t afford to leave alone for a long period of time. Moreover, these ways will last you for a long time and you do not have to worry about never seeing this or that hairstyle again because it was made by a professional and you have no idea how they did it.
You never have to experience that awful feeling of having to take down beautiful hairdo just because it is the end of the day and the show is over. With this method, you can keep the hairstyles you love.
If you are looking to change your appearance fast and with minimal effort, then read on.
The fastest way to change your appearance is to go to a wig shop and learn how to pick a wig for your needs. Yep, that is the picture you see of me wearing my black short hairdo wig. I absolutely love it and it is one of my favorite wigs of all time.
You might say, well, this is self explanatory. In a way you are right. However, I am going to guide you through the steps of choosing the correct wig and style so that you can actually look as if it is your natural hair. No sense in getting a wig that looks awful and you feel like you can never wear it in public. The whole point of this post is to teach you how to do it so that it looks absolutely natural.
The whole point of this post is to teach you the how to's so that you look absolutely natural.
Let’s start. How do you select a wig? In my experience, and I have some when it comes to wigs and wig shops and even wigs from online, you have to be the expert yourself. First things first. If this is your first time, do not buy a wig online. The biggest reason is because you do not yet have experience in knowing which companies have good wigs online. Second reason is that before you can shop online, you have to know what looks good on you and what textures wigs have.
You do not want to start online. What you want to do is go to any wig shop, preferably to a few before you buy, and start trying wings on. What you want to make sure is that you try different wig styles even the ones you think will absolutely not go for you because chances are you might be very well surprised. Many times I have discovered that the wigs I initially didn’t like actually looked better than the ones I thought would.
Do not assume that the wig shop workers know what kind of wig will look good on you. In my experience they rarely do. They are not professional hairstylists and usually have no clue.
Do not rely on the shop workers to tell you what will look good on you. Many of the times, at least in my experience, they really do not have the taste nor the experience of knowing what would look good on you. However, still give them a try. If they offer a wig and it looks awful, let them redeem themselves by offering you a few other wigs to try on. If after a few more tries the wigs they offer still look absolutely horrific, then chances are they are not good at helping you pick.
Beware that some of the wig shops I have been to only allow 3 wigs to try. I personally think it is absolutely ridiculous. How a person is supposed to know what looks good on them having only 3 wigs to try? Nonetheless, most of the wig shops do not have that policy so that is good news. I personally like going to different locations in different parts of the town because some wig shops offer really good selection while others overprice theirs for no apparent reason.
Try to pick a wig with bangs. Bangs cover that mesh hairline on the wig which means you do not have to worry about covering it up one way or another.
Another thing you want to know is that wigs come in different qualities. All of my wigs are not natural hair. I do not recommend you spend a lot of money on natural hair wigs unless you have a need for one. If you learn (and I will teach you) how to pick a wig then it will look natural on you and no one will be able to tell.
So, how do you make it easier to choose from a million wigs that you are looking at? The best thing is to pick a wig that has bangs. I have discovered that it is the best way when it comes to making it look natural without having to use glue and make up and all the other things you will need to use to attach the wig without bangs to your head. I personally do not want to spend 3 hours attaching a wig to my head and then 3 hours to take it off. That is not for me.
Look at the texture of the wig. Does it look soft and silky? Does it have a lot of hair at the base? These will help you to pick a wig that will look natural. Also, does it have volume on top of your head when you put it on or does it look flat?
So, I use wigs that either do not have that mesh showing drastically so that it blends into my skin tone at the hair growth line, or I use wigs with bangs. Luckily for me I love bangs. If you hate bangs, I suggest you find a wig that has a lot of volume that you at least can cover that mesh on your forehead with semi bangs. The reason is that even good mesh (the part where the wig without the bangs has its hairline) will still show and you will have to deal with it one way or another.
You want to make sure that you look at the wig. Wigs that are good quality do not have to be expensive. In fact, some of the wigs I have tried that were really expensive and even natural hair looked truly awful and showed that they were wigs. Price does not make a big difference when it comes to wigs. However, there is a good average price for good wigs.
Naturally there is some kind of volume between your scalp and your hair. So pick a wig that does not just look flat as if you pasted a plastic bag over your head. You want a wig that will have volume on your head. That will make it look as if it is your natural hair.
They usually run about $50-$80 USD. This is very affordable and they will last you for a long time. My black short wig you see on this blog was $50 and I have had it for over two years. It still looks new and really in good condition. What you are looking for is quality that will look good on YOU and not on the fake head they have it on for display purposes.
Another thing you want to look at is the roots of the wig. Does it have a lot of hair or is it easy to see the mesh? Turn the wig over and look at the insides. Does it have those brush-like pieces in front and the back for you to attach it to your hair for extra security? When you put the wig on, does it look flat on your head as if you just put a plastic bag on your head. Good wigs will have volume between the scalp and the hair. Naturally there is some volume between our head and the hair.
The price of a wig does not mean it is going to be better or worse. However, wigs that will start to have better quality and will start looking natural usually are between $50-$80 USD. However, this depends on the location and also in which state. So, just look for quality tips I described above to pick one that will work best for you.
Below are a few pictures of me wearing the wigs and make up. One tip: it sometimes makes a difference what color foundation you use for this or that wig. That is because each natural hair type seems to have its own natural skin tone. If you start paying attention then you will notice that people vary in their skin tones based on what kind of hair they have.
Of course, this is not always the case but in many cases it is true. Just try different shades of foundation and concealers to find which one will work best for your new wig. It might not be the one that works best for you when you have your natural hair.
This is the finished look with my black wig with bangs. (My cat decided to scratch me pretty badly during bath time so there I have it on my chest. Little rascal.)
For concealer I used this product. They come in various colors so make sure you pick one that works best for you. As for mascara, I used this one here. It really does work in making your lashes long and does not clump together. For blush I used this one here.
I also colored my eyebrows with this pomade to make them darker than my natural brows. I used brown because using true black would be too much and would look fake on me. For my lips I used this lipstick here. For my eye shadow to make smokey eyes I used this eye shadow here.
As you can see it is very easy to change my appearance with this method. I am ready to go out with perfect hair in less than an hour this way because all I have to do is apply my make up. The hair is already done and perfect as it is.
This is the finished version with the blond wig I have. This one does not have bangs, but because the mesh hairline blends very naturally with my hairline I use it and it does not look fake. As you can see, I did use somewhat semi-bangs anyways just to distort the eye from finding the hairline.
For concealer I used this product. They come in various colors so make sure you pick one that works best for you. I used this brow pencil to contour my natural brows. The lipstick I used is the same one from above, this lipstick here. The cheek blush I used this one here. My eye shadow is this one here.
How to store your wigs
You want to make sure you take a good care of your wigs for them to last you a long time. If you have the space, I highly recommend using the head as you see in the pictures below. If not, just turn the wig inside out and store it in a plastic bag.
You want to make sure you ask them for the plastic head. Sometimes they will just give it to you, other times they will sell it to you. Put a plastic bag over it all just to make sure the dust does not settle on your wig.
As you can see it looks somewhat different on the plastic head vs on me. When you are picking your wig beware of that. Sometimes they look better on the head whereas others look really bad on the head and will look amazing on you.
They might ask you if you want the cap or not. You see me holding it in the picture above. I recommend you get the cap. Having it won’t hurt you. The reason for the cap is that if you are going to really attach the wig to your head you would need the cap. I do not do that. I found my way to work really well without having to spend 3 hours attaching/removing the wig.
The wigs I have do not really move on my head. Plus, I am not going to dance wildly where the wig can fly off of my head. If you are going to follow my method, then you won’t need the cap. But still get it from them. Maybe you will like how it feels on your head vs having the wig on straight on your head. More options is better than less options.
